Surfer Spotlight: Nick and Taylor Adamick of “Foil Surf Canada”
Every surfer knows the struggle of waiting for waves. Weeks or months of flat spells spent staring at surf forecasts, refreshing weather apps and checking their local spot multiple times a day “just in case”. Though there is no way to magically make waves appear (trust us, we’ve checked) there is a way to surf when conditions are poor or even non-existent.
Nick and Taylor Adamick of Arthur, Ontario are the brother duo behind Foil Surf Canada. For those who don’t know, foiling, or hydrofoiling, is an underwater fin with wings (like an airplane) that attaches to the bottom of a surf board, SUP or sailboat. It allows you to access the energy beneath the surface and glide above the water smoothly. “Surfing is wave sliding, foiling is wave gliding…for the first time we can ride swells not just waves!” explains the Adamick brothers.
Foiling is a pretty blanket term as there are many different ways you can do it. SailGP uses advanced foils to lift the entire boat out of the water to achieve higher speeds, while the Adamick brothers specialize in SUP foiling. When asked about how they got into it, they shared, “like everyone…after seeing Kai Lenny foiling downwind on that 14ft SUP.” Alongside these options there is also wake foiling, down winding, parawing/pocket wing foiling, flat water pumping, surfing regular waves and more. The sport is evolving everyday and because of that, new forms of foiling are born all the time.
The Adamick brothers launched their Instagram account, “Foil Surf Canada” back in 2019. They use their platform to share clips of themselves and others foiling in various different styles and offer foil lessons which you can book via DM. Though Arthur, Ontario is home, the Adamick brothers say the best foiling experience they’ve ever had was in Cox Bay in Tofino, B.C.. “I had some of the best days of my life out there, absolutely dreamy place for foiling. Lots of swell and lots of room!”
